History of the hotel

Hôtel Rohan, formerly Hôtel des Rohan then Hôtel Cardinal de Rohan, bears the name of an illustrious cardinal, bishop of Strasbourg. He served as ambassador to Vienna in 1772, was compromised in the famous affair involving the Queen’s necklace, was arrested by order of the king, and was finally imprisoned in 1785.

The building that houses the hotel today was rebuilt in 1963 following the bombing raids that hit Strasbourg during the Second World War, destroying the old building (rue du Vieil-hôpital, behind the hotel, remains one of the finest surviving examples of the impact of the bombs that hit the area). In the 1970s, it became one of the finest establishments in the Alsatian city.

The Hotel Rohan is ideally located in the very center of Strasbourg, a city in eastern France on the left bank of the Rhine. The capital of the Grand-Est region and the Bas-Rhin département, Strasbourg is also home to the Council of Europe (since 1949) and the European Parliament (since 1992).
